The Lao ABS Authority hereby acknowledges that the Biodiversity Division of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), established in April 2001 in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan, and represented by Dr. Masanori Tamaoki (Director of the Biodiversity Division; Email: mtamaoki@nies.go.jp; Tel: +81 298502445), is granted the right to access and utilize the microbial strain sample preserved as MCC-NIES NIES-2861 (Aerosakkonema funiforme) under the international project entitled “Mekong River Ecosystem Monitoring” within the framework of the GEMS/Water Programme of UNDP.
The ABS Authority further recognizes that the original sample, from which this strain was isolated, was collected by Dr. M. M. Watanabe in December 2006 from the northern area of Vientiane. The strain was identified by Nanda Kyaw Thu and Makoto M. Watanabe, and was deposited at NIES on 6 July 2017.

This permission is granted to the Biodiversity Division, NIES, for a period of one year for the access to and utilization of the microbial strain preserved in MCC-NIES as NIES-2861, Aerosakkonema funiforme Nanda Kyaw Thu et Watanabe (Cyanophyta). Any request for an extension shall be submitted to the Authority at least one month prior to the expiration of this permission.
In accordance with the principles of access and benefit-sharing under the Nagoya Protocol, should scientific research and development activities involving the genetic resources lead to the development and commercial production of any resulting product, the Biodiversity Division, NIES shall notify the ABS Authority for further consultation.
Where such utilization falls within the scope of the Nagoya Protocol, the Biodiversity Division, NIES shall, as appropriate, enter into mutually agreed terms with the competent national authority to ensure the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from such utilization, in compliance with the applicable laws and regulations of the Lao PDR.

1. The applicant is required to share the research results and related publications with the Lao ABS Authority in acknowledgment of the resource provider.
2. This permission applies solely to the specific research activities described above.
3. Should any further experiments involving the genetic resources, or the use of their digital sequence information (DSI), be intended for commercial purposes, the Biodiversity Division, NIES, Japan, shall inform the ABS Authority in order to establish a new ABS Agreement.
4. The applicant is also required to acknowledge the country of origin of the genetic resources in any production or utilization of digital sequence information (DSI) derived from such resources.
The samples or biological resources mentioned above shall not be transferred to any third party without prior permission from the Lao ABS Authority.
The microbial strain sample (Aerosakkonema funiforme) will be studied at the Biodiversity Division, National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan, for the preparation of replicates and derivatives using DNA-based techniques.
