Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI)
The Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) is a state corporation established under the Science, Technology, and Innovation Act, 2013, and operates under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry in Kenya. KEFRI as a Checkpoint under the Nagoya Protocol
As a research institution with a focus on forestry genetic resources, KEFRI plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) requirements under the Nagoya Protocol. Its relevance as a checkpoint includes:
- Monitoring Utilization:
- Verifies the legal acquisition and utilization of forestry genetic resources accessed from provider country, such as seeds, plant material, or traditional knowledge related to forestry.
- Ensures users comply with Prior Informed Consent (PIC) and Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT).
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Provides documentation on genetic resources accessed for research or commercial use.
- Collaborates with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to ensure ABS compliance.
- Support for the ABS Clearing-House:
- Facilitates the submission of information on access permits and agreements to the ABS Clearing-House, enhancing transparency and traceability.
- Capacity Building and Awareness:
- Educates researchers and stakeholders on ABS regulations and their obligations under the Nagoya Protocol.
- Ensures that forestry resources are used sustainably and equitably.
