The Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) plays a critical role in Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) compliance for wildlife genetic resources in Kenya. Its functions as a checkpoint include:

  1. Monitoring Utilization of Wildlife Genetic Resources:

    • Ensures legal compliance when genetic resources derived from wildlife, such as samples for research or traditional knowledge, are accessed.
    • Verifies that users have obtained Prior Informed Consent (PIC) and negotiated Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT) as per Kenya’s ABS regulations.
  2. Documentation and Verification:

    • Issues or verifies permits and documents for the use of wildlife genetic resources.
    • Ensures that ABS requirements are met before genetic resources leave the country or are used for research, commercialization, or other purposes.
  3. Collaboration with NEMA and the ABS Clearing-House:

    • Works closely with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to monitor compliance.
    • Contributes data on ABS-related activities to the ABS Clearing-House, ensuring transparency and global traceability.
  4. Training and Awareness:

    • Educates researchers, institutions, and communities on ABS compliance and the sustainable use of wildlife genetic resources.
    • Builds capacity to address emerging challenges in wildlife genetic resource management.
