The Microbial Resources Research Infrastructure (MIRRI), a pan-European distributed research infrastructure for microbial domain Biological Resource Centers (mBRCs) , developed the MIRRI Best Practice Manual on Access and Benefit Sharing. This tool was designed to assure compliance of MIRRI partner mBRCs with the Nagoya Protocol and Regulation (EU) No 511/2014, which governs user compliance measures and benefit sharing within the European Union. This Best Practice Manual aims to provide guidance for mBRCs to implement ABS institutional policies with regard to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, and more specifically for: 1. Managing acquisition of biological material for accession into the public collection . 2. Transfer of material from the public collection to other mBRCs or third parties, and the delivery of other services. 3. Access and internal use of material, and benefit sharing by the mBRC. 4. Managing documentation and data. 5. Training and awareness-raising. 6. Managing secured collections. This best practice manual was primarily designed for the management of collections of living microbial strains and their derivatives (e.g., DNA samples), but it could also be useful for researchers who work in other areas of the microbial domain and do research and development on microbial genetic resources or supply such resources to other users outside their institutions.
