Dear IAC experts,
Please see the attached PDF presentation of the revised mock-up version of the homepage, search, and country profiles. Please provide comments before 15 Jan 2016.
Please note that these mockups focus on general functionality and layout. Details such as fonts, colours, specific text and content should not be taken into consideration at this time. These details will be considered as the mockups are further developed and implemented.
Improvements not included in the mockups are:
1. Improving the spacing in the display of information on the ABS Clearing-House and in the design of the forms for submission of information.
Wherever possible spacing and font sizes of visual elements will be minimized to provide a more compact and improved display of search results and other design elements.
2. Removing contact details of authorized users involved in the creation and publication of records in the ABS Clearing-House.
The display of contact details (names and emails) will be removed from the record history and associated meta-data (“created by” and “published by” will be replaced with “created on” and “published on”).
3. Exploring ways of dealing with outdated records.
One option could be to include functionality to “report” outdated or problems records on each reference record and SCBD record. This report would get sent to the SCBD or record publisher to take appropriate action and delete or update the record as necessary.
4. Providing a link from the ABS Clearing-House country profile to the CBD country profile and vice versa.
This link will be provided.
5. Providing the option to download reports of ABS Clearing-House records.
Each record will include a link to download the PDF version. To download reports or groups of records, one possible option could be to add functionality that would generate a downloadable pdf versions of records in the search results. This would provide the flexibility for a user to generate reports of any combination of records (limited only by the search).
6. Improving the visibility of clickable links and buttons and providing consistent visual cues throughout the ABS Clearing-House;
The text and/or background of clickable links will change color in a consistent way whenever the mouse moves over them indicating that the item is clickable. This will be applied to all links across the website.
7. Improving the responsive design on small screen sizes, for example, on tablets and mobile phones.
Mockups for smaller screen sizes will be developed and circulated for comments only after the regular screen size versions are finalized.
Warm wishes,
Matt

Dear Matt,
1. The proposals on the message seem appropriate. Regarding the proposal on ways of dealing with outdated records, this seems a sensible option to take.
2. Home page.
a. I like the cleaner look.
b. “Direct links to the Country Profile Search page (List of countries and map)” Do each of the three buttons deliver the whole list of countries, or is the retrieved list of the countries in that category only? I think on balance I prefer the second option.
3. About page
a. Sensible idea to declutter the Home page
b. I assume the link “Info about the NP and relevant links to the NP information on the CBD Website” will take the user to https://www.cbd.int/abs/?
4. Search
a. It appears from the instruction “Click here to get the full list of search filters” that not all are shown. It would be helpful to have some indication under each of the three headings whether there additional filters available for that heading or not.
b. The search box I suspect will be confusing. I would expect to search for any term in any document (or at least a keyword), not search to find a filter. I suggest there should be a keyword search at least (if there isn’t why do we have them?). If the search box is for filters only this should be clearly stated, and a second box for terms added.
5. Country profile search
a. Looks good
6. Additional improvements
a. Email protection. Does this adequately protect the e-mails?
Best wishes
Chris

Dear Matt, dear colleagues – thanks a lot for this revised proposal of the homepage/ search and country profile. I believe it is much more user-friendly than the current version, a big thank you for implementing the changes. I like in particular the color distinction for different record types (I realize it is already done on our current website but much less visible). For homepage I would think that it would be useful to have the portal navigation bar (so search – submit etc. buttons) bigger – to make them more prominent on the page. From the perspective of the website user those are super important buttons and there shouldn't be a need to invest time to identify them. They should be easy to notice/ spot. For search page I like the search box although I agree with Chris that there is a risk that people may put all sort of words in there and then get disappointed they don't get any sensible results so maybe it should be clear that this concerns only keywords search.
As for date protection – I have checked with our colleagues responsible for data protection legislation and although our legislation is only applicable in EU, it would seem advisable to include some language about data protection on the website. We can talk about in details bilaterally.
For the outdated records, I like the idea of reporting outdated record. Presumably this would be a functionality that could be used by anybody? So anybody would be in position to bring it to the attention of the SCBD (and the country concerned) and then it would need to be verified and corrected. Is my understanding of your proposal correct?
My apologies for slightly belated reply. All the best. Alicja
