Strategic Importance and Rationale for having this event in the COP15 Pavilion |
The fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the utilization of genetic resources is one of the three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the primary objective of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization. Benefits generated from the access to and use of genetic resources and/or associated traditional knowledge can contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and can supplement the financial resources required for implementing the 2050 Vision.
Access and Benefit-Sharing is Goal C of the Global Biodiversity Framework that must be achieved by 2050. This goal states that the benefits from the utilization of genetic resources are shared fairly and equitably, with a substantial increase in both monetary and non-monetary benefits shared, including for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This side event provides examples of GEF-funded projects implemented with the support of UNDP that are contributing to the achievement of this goal. |
Proposed event synopsis/summary |
The GEF-8 biodiversity focal area strategy includes capacity building for implementation of the Nagoya Protocol which continues long standing GEF support to the Protocol.
