The CETAF Code of Conduct and Best Practices on ABS (CETAF CoC) has been recognized as best practices under (EU) Regulation No 511/2014, as per Commission Decission dated 10 May 2019. This first and unique recognition credits the understanding of the community of scientits and research organizations united under CETAF (Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities), on how to address due compliance with EU ABS Regulations. The CETAF CoC is based on commonalities in existing collection management criteria and research workflows, policies and standards in Natural History Collections and Botanic Gardens, including how samples are handled, processed and submitted to uses which constitute utilisation in the sense of the NP, as well as on ABS-compliant workflows, such as exchange of living plants under IPEN, and the standardized routines for sample submission to BOLD. The CETAF CoC gathers common principles, a glossary of terms and model MTAs. the Best Practice guide (Annex 1) helps to manage obligations, offers guidance to negotiate agreements with provider country authorities and others and to meet their resulting responsibilities. Annex 2 is a “Statement of Use of Biological Material” which explains the use to which material is put in member institutions. Annex 5, “Practical Advice for ABS Management for Museums, herbaria and Botanic Gardens” colates examples of tools in practice and a list of necessary activities in various workflows. The package also includes different Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) to facilitate documenting the transfer and exchange of biological material.
