This Statutory instrument was gazetted in 2009 and provides a legal framework for access and benefit sharing of Genetic resources as well as the protection of indigenous genetic resource –based knowledge in Zimbabwe. The SI requires that any researcher or investor who intends to access any genetic material from any locality within Zimbabwe should consult the local community seeking permission to do so. After the consultations with the local community, the proponent and the community should have a signed agreement which clearly states what will be harvested, the purpose it will be used for and what the communities will benefit. After this agreement has been signed, it should be deposited with the Environmental Management Agency and further forwarded to a team of technical experts who will analyze the agreement after which a certificate will be issued allowing the use of the genetic material.
