Global Multilateral Benefit-Sharing Mechanism (Article 10)

Article 10 of the Nagoya Protocol requires the Parties to consider the need for and modalities of a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism to address the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from the utilization of genetic resources and traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources that occur in transboundary situations or for which it is not possible to grant or obtain prior informed consent.

The article also states that benefits shared by users of genetic resources and traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources through this mechanism shall be used to support the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components globally.

In decision XI/1, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity mandated a number of activities concerning Article 10 of the Nagoya Protocol to take place during the current inter-sessional period (see the relevant section of the decision). This portal on Article 10 is intended to provide up-to-date information on these activities.

The broad consultation on Article 10 requested by the decision will be conducted via a series of online discussion groups beginning on 8 April 2013. Parties, other Governments, indigenous and local communities and relevant organizations are invited to nominate representatives to participate in the online discussion groups to the Executive Secretary no later than 25 March 2013.

Please note that participants for the expert group on Article 10 will be selected from among those who take part in the online discussion groups.
